WEEK 4 EOC: ADVERTISING IS BASED ON HAPPINESS

It doesn't matter how good that ad looks on the billboard or that commerical is on tv; if what is being advertised isn't what you are looking for, you won't be happy with your purchase. There is a perception out there that the public will buy "whatever" just because other people do and because it gives "status".
I was shopping at Ross the other day, (being that I am a student, I am on a budget and this store just makes sense to me), and I came across a pair of Nikes. I was looking for something that was really funky, something that would fit my personality, yet be up-to-date with the current trend of fashion as well. Nike has always been a long standing, respectable, well-known company.
So, I thought, why not try these shoes on? I can kill two birds with one stone, look cool and feel cool all at the same time. I liked how they looked, so I bought them. Later on, when I got them home and wore them, they were so uncomfortable, I put them back in the box. I ended up selling them to my cousin because it was too late to return them since I had already worn them.
The whole thing irritated me because I expected these shoes to be comfortable and that I would enjoy them. That was my perception. Well, these didnt make me too happy and I realized that it doesn't matter  how great a company is or how much I paid for something, if it doesn't fulfill my needs, it will never make me happy, no matter how cool it looks.

Because loving what you do is just that damn important!

Week 3 EOC: internet privacy VS. market research

The internet has its many ways of violating ones personal information, a lot of people may know and see it as they fill out online applications and Survey on a daily bases. There is this one Survey that every one passes around its your friendly "get to know me survey" that is always passed around on myspace, facebook, and freindster. Many think its innocent although not to a hacker how sends them out to seek out personal information to log into your bank accounts and so on. This cant really be avoided only you can avoid it by not answering these simple Q&As. 1) Be more choosy about  what sites you are on.

Marketing companies need to have information about the demographic they are trying to cater to. Before the age of the internet, our mailboxes and telephones were constantly bombarded with letters, and phone calls, from companies trying to find out what our favorite ice cream flavor or deodorant preference was. It was very annoying to be interrupted during a meal to answer the phone, only to find out it was a telemarketer who aggressively asked questions and refused to let you go.
These type of behaviors prompted the FCC and other governmental agencies to give the power back to the people with things such as the "no call" lists and the power to sue companies for harrasement, if an individual felt warranted in doing so.
What happens to the marketing companies? The persist and continue to thrive due to a new source of information-the internet. No more phone calls or wasted paper. They could simply flood your inbox as soon as they got ahold of your email adress. In those years before spam boxes, we often checked our mail, every little piece, only to be irritated by another survey. I would have to say I would rather be irritated by a survey than some of the things that are happening these days.

"The types of statistical information we may gather on behalf of our clients include the number of visitors to their Web sites, which pages or portions of pages such as web videos, are visited, duration of page/video views, advertising click-through metrics, the location of visitors prior to accessing their Web site, and details on browsers (including Internet Protocol 'IP' addresses or browser configurations). "
"The simple fact is that when done correctly, the information generated by a survey can help boost market share, lower corporate risk, pave the way for a clear perception of markets and assist in the creation of effective marketing and advertising programs. Until recently, most surveys were paper-based or conducted by telemarketers. Although somewhat effective under most circumstances, marketers and HR professionals have discovered a much more powerful survey method—online research."

week 3 EOC: making money for good

When you think of making money for a good cause, you often have to stop yourself, and ask, " How am I suppose to achieve this goal?" One of the easiest ways to do this within a business would collaborating with a non-profit organization and using cause marketing. What is cause marketing?

"The terms get bandied about (and their definitions are in flux) – cause-related marketing (a/k/a cause marketing), social entrepreneurship, and socially conscious companies – but the basic underlying principle is the same: creating a company that operates ethically, provide social benefits, and/or are sensitive to the environment. The goals are, in short, making money and solving social problems."
http://www.womenandbiz.com/2007/12/21/green-global-plain-good-marketing-socially-conscious-companies/

Making money for a good cause is one the highest respected reasons to even become an entreprenuer. Figuring out how to raise money for a good cause can be trickier if you are unsure of how to go about it. You first need to think or your product or service in terms of the the greater good. How or who will this affect? By solving that question, finding a non-profit company should be relatively easy.

"Nonprofits potentially benefit from increased fundraising and exposure. Likewise, corporations that are socially involved potentially benefit from increased brand loyalty and employee morale. Studies have shown that for products of similar quality, consumers will consider the company’s image and reputation when choosing a brand." http://foundationcenter.org/getstarted/faqs/html/cause_marketing.html

If you can make or design a product or service that aligns well with a non-profit organization, you can attract more customers, and at the same time, make money for your cause. Finding the right organization is the key; if you can't match your product or service with the right cause, it could become disaterous quickly, such as the KFC/Susan B. Komen partnership.

"This represents a larger issue where nonprofits consistently choose money over strategic partnerships, dancing with the wrong partner and degrading their brand value."

Week 2 EOC: Boston Consulting Group - Video Games

For more than forty years, The Boston Consulting Group has been shaping strategic thinking in business. The Boston Consulting Group on Strategy offers a broad and up-to-date selection of the firm's best ideas on strategy with fresh ideas, insights, and practical lessons for managers, executives, and entrepreneurs in every industry.
http://search.barnesandnoble.com/The-Boston-Consulting-Group-on-Strategy/Carl-W-Stern/e/9780471757221. The Boston Consulting Group takes on major players and dominates the marketing world via internet marketing, predicting and foretelling the future of many compny outcomes. Video gaming is the hottest trend in entertainment right now. The current consoles out there are Sony's Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and Nintento Wii. There are also PC games available, but their popularity isn't as large as it used to be, give the fact that now many users can connect with other players through the internet connections in their gaming consoles.
There are a variety of games out there and the majority of consoles become outdated in as little as 5 or 6 years time. Surprisingly, some of the most exciting games to play, as the ones that you can play on the Wii. It is built for all ages, and doesn't focus on violence as a selling point. In my opinion, if I was going to own a console, it would be a Wii. You can even watch NEtflix movies for 9 bucks a month through your Wii! And my grandma can play with me too(if she didn't think the whole thing was absurd to begin with!). I guess my opinion about the awesomeness of the Wii is shared, and by one of the most reputable comapnies out there.
"In April 2008, Nintendo was ranked seventh in the annual BusinessWeek-Boston Consulting Group ranking of the world's most innovative companies. The award recognized the company as an innovative design powerhouse that had challenged the prevailing business model of the video game industry with its new video game console, the Wii." http://hbr.org/product/nintendo-s-disruptive-strategy-implications-for-th/an/HKU814-PDF-ENG
Why was the fabulous Wii chosen? One of the mjor things that Nintendo did was to bring out all the people who don't normally sit and play Grand Theft Auto or Warcraft. Wii is a family-style gaming console and in an age where technology rules, what better way to bring a family together on Game Night, than with a night of dancing or bowling via the Wii?
I sure my opinion will change. The true gamers out there, unlike myself, are going for the virtual experience. Many gamers out there eat, breathe, and sleep with their games. The live to be in the game. The marketing pwerhouse who captures the true gamer's heart will blow the roof off the industry and climb up BCG's ever famous list.
"The next generation is going to be so powerful that playing a game is going to be the equivalent of playing a CGI movie today," predicts Yves Guillemot, chairman and CEO of the publisher.http://www.cnbc.com/id/31331241/The_Next_Generation_of_Gaming_Consoles

WEEK 4 EOC: Excellent Customer Service

When we go to watch a movie, aside from the things we purchase to eat from the soncession stand, there isn't a tangible item that we can walk away with when the movie credits roll. The only thing we are left with is the experience we had, even if the movie itself was not so great. Every person we come into contact with during our theatre experience has the opportunity to enrich our experience. They can also leave a sour taste in our mouth, much like the last time I went to the movies.
I was at the theatre the other day and felt like someone should have be refreshed on how to treat a customer. I bought some candy that tasted funny and waited until the end of my movie to bring it up to the concession attendants. When I did so, they didn't even offer to refund my money; they simply gave me a new box and sent me on my way. They didn't even ask me if I wanted another one, or what they could do to make me happy.

However  trite it may seem, I sat through my whole movie with a crummy box of candy that was almost as much as the movie itself. There are many theatres in Las Vegas, all competing with each other, all offering similar products and services. When I walk out of a theatre, the last thought on my mind should be the ending of the movie, not the finish of the candy on my palate. Needless to say, while it wasn't their intention to sell me a defective box of candy, it was their responsibility to remedy the situation. They lost out on an opportunity to provide me with excellent customer service and just give me my money back. They could have asked me how I felt or what I wanted. Next time, I think I'll choose one of the twenty other theatres here in the Las Vegas Valley.

"Excellent customer service is more than what you say or do for your customers. It also means giving customers a chance to make their feelings known."

WEEK ONE EOC:MY VOICE

When I design I like to run a ribbon of creative artistic expression wherever I go. I am current attending the Art Institute, majoring in Web Design. My talents include a visual arts span from digital illustrations to photography to acrylics splatter across canvas. My style leans to the abstract, challenging my audience to trudge bravely through the thoughts of an artist to create a very personal interpretation of their own.
Making my way to Vegas from Texas via Cali, I grew up and was raised in a small town in Texas and I had no idea what a web designer or graphic designer was or what they do. So with that said I’m now on a mission to not only educate myself but to educate our future. And to reach out to our minds that it’s not only being the all star quarter back or becoming doctor the only choices we have to succeed in this growing world. “There is more”. We all need to educate our future and acknowledge our teachers as well in that process. I’m also involved in some of Las Vegas charity events and art communities; I enjoy socializing with in my art community. Also on my spare time I enjoy taking photographs as well, anything from weddings, to parties and gatherings capturing time in it's essence. I then combine all the elements I enjoy doing into one as a stop motion video. And this is where SMFUNK photography comes to play. Bringing all that I know and love to do and putting it into everything I do. Then I’ll take the work I have created, up load it onto the world wide web then, watch to see everyone’s responses as it's shared on to others as well. I’m constantly online leaning and reading about new things, as well as looking on to other artist work and websites and meeting the world all at the same time. Designing 1Love one step at a time.
